Writing: Articles by Nancy Sommers

I just wanted to share that there are some great readings out there that can really challenge the ESL teacher's perspective on responding to ESL writing. I have been teaching an ESL/Bilingual language arts classes at the middle high level for several years. In particular, various prewriting exercises have helped me to have better success in the classroom. One of the articles we are reading for our ESL Writing class is an article by Nancy Sommers entitled, "Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers." She gives some really good ideas in helping the ESL teacher help the student to become more proficient in thier writing and then allowing the teacher to make the necessary adjustments. We have read several other aritcles by her in the class as well that have changed my philosophy on prewriting and revision. If you get a chance, try to read some of these articles for yourselves, they give some practical information that can be used in the classroom.
