Pronunciation: Dr. Seuss for rhythm
Katharine Shipley
I used Dr. Seuss for a low level English pronunciation class. It is ideal because the vocabulary is simple and the pictures are fun. This was a project done over a few classes after many days of focus on rhythm, intonation and pausing. I gave one Dr. Seuss book to each pair and they chose 15-20 sentences they wanted to perform for the group (I let them read the whole book together a couple of times). Then, they had to analyze the sentences for linking, stress patterns, rhythm, reduced speech etc. After I checked their transcriptions, they practiced and "performed" for the group. It was a lot of fun and they had a great time with it.
