EPIK vs. Hagwons — What’s the Difference?
๐ซ EPIK (Public Schools)
- ๐ Structured schedule (8:30–4:30)
- ๐๏ธ 18–21 vacation days + national holidays
- ๐ค Work with a co-teacher
- ๐๏ธ Government-run & stable
- ๐ Housing + settlement allowance
๐ Hagwons (Private Academies)
- ๐ Work schedule varies (e.g., 9–6 or afternoon/evening shifts)
- ๐๏ธ 11–15 vacation days (legally 11 minimum; varies by school)
- ๐ค Some hagwons offer coโteaching depending on the school
- ๐ฅ Small class sizes (typically 7–12 students)
- ๐ฐ Starting salary is generally higher than public schools
- ๐ Housing typically provided
Which One Is Right for You?
If you prefer a predictable schedule, longer vacations, and working within Korea’s public education system, EPIK may be the best fit. If you're looking for higher earning potential, later working hours, and smaller class sizes, you may thrive in a hagwon environment.
