Teach English for Academic Purposes in China

Victoria University English (VUE) is recruiting qualified English language teachers for classroom-based teaching at our partner universities in China. We have one position in Shenyang and two in Zhengzhou, commencing in February 2027. Appointments cover two teaching semesters and may be renewed.

Liaoning University — Shenyang

One Year 1 EAP teaching position

Teach in the VU–Liaoning University Asia/Australia Business School Joint Program.

Year 1 students generally begin at approximately IELTS 4.5 (low B1) and work towards IELTS 5.5 (low B2).

Teachers have two classes, meeting each class five times a week for 90 minutes. The maximum teaching load is 18 hours per week. Teachers work Monday to Friday according to the Liaoning University timetable.

Pay and benefits

· AUD $1,250 per week, paid monthly in RMB into a Chinese bank account.

· An additional payment at the end of each semester equal to 10% of the CNY salary earned during that semester.

· Hotel accommodation for approximately 7–10 days on arrival.

· A taxable accommodation allowance of RMB 2,200 per month from arrival until the end of the appointment. The first three months can be paid in advance on request (after arrival in China).

· Reimbursement of round-trip economy airfare between your home country and Shenyang once per year.

· Reimbursement of eligible Z visa, work permit and residence permit processing expenses. A CNY 1,500 payment is included in the first pay to help cover visa expenses in China.

· Expatriate health insurance for the teacher and VU corporate travel insurance for approved travel to and from China.

Henan University — Zhengzhou

One Year 1 EAP teaching position and one Year 2 EAP teaching position.

Teach in the VU–Henan University International School of Technology and/or Advanced Institute of Finance joint programs.

Year 1 students generally begin at approximately IELTS 4.5 (low B1) and work towards IELTS 5.5 (low B2). Year 2 students generally begin at approximately IELTS 5.5 (low B2) and work towards IELTS 6.0 (mid B2).

Teachers typically have three classes, meeting each class four times a week for 90 minutes. The teaching load is 18 hours per week, plus six hours of administrative duties. Teachers work Monday to Friday according to the Henan University timetable.

Pay and benefits

· CNY 4,700 per week after tax, paid monthly into a Chinese bank account.

· An additional AUD $2,000 administrative payment in June and December.

· A private, furnished one-bedroom apartment provided by Henan University, with basic cooking and laundry facilities.

· Reimbursement of round-trip economy airfare between your home country and Zhengzhou each semester, following completion of that semester.

· Reimbursement of eligible Z visa, work permit and residence permit processing expenses at the end of the semester.

· Expatriate health insurance for the teacher and VU corporate travel insurance for approved travel to and from China.

Teaching and appointment details

At both universities, teachers deliver EAP lessons, assess student work, attend team meetings, support students at risk, prepare end-of-semester results and participate in end-of-course testing. An on-site VU English Coordinator provides coordination and support.

Please note: Employment and payment apply only to teaching weeks during each semester. Teachers are not paid during non-teaching periods or between semesters.

Minimum requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements for a Chinese work permit:

· Be under 60 years of age for the full duration of the contract.

· Hold a bachelor’s degree from an English-medium university.

· Hold a 120-hour TEFL or TESOL qualification, CELTA, or equivalent.

· Have at least two years of documented English language teaching experience.

· Be able to provide a reference letter from a previous employer that includes a clear recommendation.

· Be a citizen of Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand, the United States or Canada. Applicants from other countries whose primary language is English may be considered, subject to approval by the Chinese authorities.

· Be able to obtain a clear criminal record check.

All appointments are subject to obtaining a valid Chinese Z (work) visa.
