The goal of the ELI is to increase the English language skills of non-native speakers to the level needed for study at a college or university in the United States. Students have 20 hours per week of instruction in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and American culture.

The Intensive English for Internationals Program, a noncredit program at The University of Memphis (formerly Memphis State University), is a highly academic course for the improvement of student skills in grammar, reading, writing, listening and conversation.
