Korea Military Academy (native-speaking English Instructor)

Job Description

Korea Military Academy (KMA) is one of the most prestigious military academies in the world. Our cadets are trained to be elite leaders of the highest sort, dedicated to their mission of defending their country.

KMA provides a well-designed education system and educational environment, befitting its status as an elite military academy.


1. Applicants of non-Korean nationality must have a bachelorís degree from a four-year university (or three-years for universities in the United Kingdom) in an English-speaking country; or a bachelor's degree in the English Language from a country where English is their official second language.

2. Applicants of Korean nationality must have a master's degree or higher and at least six years of residence experience in a country where English is their mother tongue.

Preference is given to applicants with the following specifications:

1. Experience in the military or military-related institutions,

2. A certificate in English language teaching such as TESOL, TEFL, or CELTA,

3. A master's degree or higher in the relevant field (for Korean applicants, a doctorate degree in the English language),

4. More than three years of teaching experience, or

5. Records of published articles related to English and/or teaching in academic journals

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Plan, organize, and provide instruction in academic English that meets KMA standards.

2. Offer individual/small-group feedback sessions or office hours outside of the classroom.

3. Work together with other professors to create a consensus about joint educational objectives and grading standards.

4. Oversee assigned out-of-classroom activities, such as students' English club, public English speaking contest, English debate competition, during the school day, as needed.

Contract Duration and Compensation:

1. Contract lasts for 1 year.

2. Instructors are paid 2.4 million Korean won per month (before tax). Occasionally, when an instructor is asked to work overtime, a higher pay rate is applied.

3. Working hours: Mon-Fri: 08:00~17:00
Instructors work up to 40 hours per week. They usually teach 12 hours per week on an average week, and are required to stay in-campus during regular work hours (upon approval, instructors may work outside the office when there is no class) to attend meetings, offer counseling to students, assist with translation, etc.

** Instructors can use all KMA sports facilities during 15:30~17:00 on weekdays (13:00~17:00 on Wednesdays). Our sports facilities include: two gyms, a 6-lane swimming pool, tennis courts, badminton courts, basketball courts, and football fields. **

4. A private faculty office equipped with essential furniture (office desk, bookshelf, chairs, etc) will be provided for the instructors.

5. A private apartment with three bedrooms and one bathroom (about 80 m2) will be provided nearby (10 minute walking distance to KMA) should the instructor choose to have it. The apartments require a deposit.

6. Instructors may take 25 days of paid leave (15 days during summer and 10 days during winter) between semesters (however, not during 2 weeks of the Winter English Intensive Course period).

7. E-2 visa sponsorship will be provided if needed.

* You will be asked to bring your Alien Registration Card (ARC) for interview. You must also have the required paperwork (criminal background check, health check) prepared on hire.

Timeline (All dates are subject to change):

1. Application must be submitted by January 9, 2020.

2. Candidates selected for interview will be notified on January 10, 2020.

3. Interview and demo-lecture (Skype interviews are possible for overseas candidates) will take place between January 14-16, 2020.

** Please prepare a 15-minute demo lecture for an intermediate-level English class. **

4. Results for the interview and demo-lecture will be announced on January 17, 2020.

5. On-the-job training and moving-in start date is February 24, 2020.

6. Expected start date is March 2, 2020.
