Hello prospective applicants! My name is Sam; I am a citizen of the United States of America and a graduate of the University of Florida. Currently, I am the Foreign Native English Teacher at Jackie¡¯s English School in Gumi-si, South Korea. I arrived at Jackie¡¯s English School in August of 2017 on a one-year contract. Like many first-timers, arriving in a new country, half-way across the world, to live seemed to be a daunting task. My fear within was almost immediately eliminated upon meeting the owner and principal of the school, Jackie. After completing my one-year contract, I liked the school and living in Gumi so much that I signed another contract with Jackie, which finishes in the coming months. After this contract, I plan on finishing my Master¡¯s Degree in Education!
Jackie is an extremely accommodating, helpful, and understanding person. She helped every step of the way from getting my E2 Visa to making me feel comfortable living in Gumi. Currently, there are about 130 students in the school; mainly elementary school students with evening classes being middle school students. Given that all students go through an entrance interview, our school only admits the best students. It truly has been a pleasure teaching the students of Jackie¡¯s school. All students are well-mannered and Jackie operates the school with the teachers¡¯ best interests at heart. It will be a bittersweet moment when I leave Jackie¡¯s School.
As for living in Gumi, I really feel connected to the Korean culture and way of life. Gumi is the perfect city to live in Korea. During my free time, I enjoy playing Ice Hockey for the Gumi Eagles or taking a train from Gumi Station to go cheer on Daegu F.C of the K League (soccer) or the Samsung Lions (also a Daegu team) of the KBO (baseball). Given the small size of Korea, it is easy to travel to big cities via the train for weekend trips. For example the train to Daegu is (20 minutes), Busan (1 hour 10 minutes), Seoul (1 hour 30 minutes), and Daejeon (30 minutes). Overall, I am extremely pleased and satisfied with my time in Gumi, South Korea at Jackie¡¯s English School!
Please, if I can be of any assistance at all or if you have any questions, email me at [email protected]. I look forward to hearing from you!

To whom it may concern,
I am writing to detail my experience working at Jackie’s English School in Gumi, South Korea. It remains one of the best decisions I have ever made, and here is why.
Having never lived abroad before, I was hesitant to take a job in a town I’d never heard of, in a country where I couldn’t speak the language. Would there be other foreigners? Would I like my boss and my job? “Don’t worry, mom. I’ll be back in one year” I said.
Jackie went above and beyond to make me feel at home and comfortable in my new life. She anticipated what I would need and had me settled in no time. With Jackie’s help, I felt confident, like I was put in this situation to succeed.
The academy itself is clean, new, and well maintained. Jackie expects the best from all her students, so discipline is never an issue. The students range from elementary (learning phonics) to middle school (essay writing and novel study). Jackie provides effective lesson plans to follow, so no further lesson planning is needed, although suggestions are always welcome. The schedule is from early afternoon to evening, Monday to Friday, so you have your weekends free to do as you so choose. Gumi may not be Seoul, but it has a great, inclusive expat community. There are always friends to meet up with and plenty of things to do. Plus, you’re only a 30-minute train ride from Daegu (the 4th largest city in South Korea).
My experience working for Jackie was the best I could have hoped for. Naturally, one year turned into two and a half. I am forever grateful to Jackie for introducing me to life as an ESL teacher. She is a driven, hard-working force of nature with a passion for teaching. Should you be lucky enough to share my experience, you won’t regret it.
February, 2015 – July, 2017
