International College Counselor & Subject Teacher - Seoul

DESCRIPTION

This is a one-year fixed term position (August 25, 2017 – August 24, 2018) with Seoul Global High School through the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education. Contract renewals are on a yearly basis.

The position of International College Counselor at Seoul Global High School, a specialized public high school that focuses on the social sciences and humanities, may be the right opportunity for you if you are capable of providing year-round individualized counseling through the college application process for all students (1st year, 2nd year, and 3rd year) who are interested in studying outside of South Korea. You will also be expected to teach a minimum of 12 subject hours per week.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor's degree (excluding Music, Art, Physical Education, Fashion, Foreign Language, and TESOL degrees)
• Prior experience in college counseling not mandatory but some knowledge of admissions processes is necessary.

Salary/Compensation:

• Starting salary of 1.8 million won per month
o Please check Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education for your pay grade
• Additional 600,000 won per month to address counseling duties
• Single housing provided for by SMOE (no pets allowed)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Some knowledge of the American college admissions process.
• Strong communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, visiting admissions officials, and all levels of school management.
• Willingness to learn about college admissions processes that span the globe.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with advising international students, managing student database programs, and evaluating data.
• Knowledge of college admissions processes across the world with an emphasis on the United States, Canada, Hong Kong, and Europe.

• Promote Culture of Safety: Demonstrates commitment to personal responsibility and value for safety; communicates safety concerns; uses and promotes safe behaviors while advising parents and students.
• Protection of Student Confidentiality: Demonstrates a commitment to maintaining strict rules and regulations when it comes to the maintenance of student data.

CORE DUTIES:

• Collaborate with school departments and individual teachers to support the learning needs of students and appropriate placement in courses.
• Write letters of recommendation as needed, complete secondary school reports, prepare and coordinate teacher recommendations, send transcripts, and fulfill school responsibilities for submitting university applications.
• Compile and maintain student records and data.
• Hold college application and letters of recommendation writing workshops for staff and faculty as needed.
• Attend college admissions counseling workshops in and out of South Korea.
• Host visiting college admissions counselors at the school.
• Develop and maintain community and school liaison representation of the college counseling department at conferences, meetings, and events.
• Provide assistance and guidance to students wishing to transfer high schools.
• Counsel students and parents on sensitive and confidential issues that are related to college admissions.
• Act as the Advance Placement (AP) Course Audit Coordinator and Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) Center Director for SGHS.
• Serve as the point-person in college admissions to other school departments.
• Attend weekly meetings with head teachers from each school department.
• Teach a minimum of 12 hours (related to applicant’s area of study) per week. *We are currently trying to lower this number*
