Explore new opportunities on a different scale

Working as an IELTS Examiner for the British Council in China gives you the chance to explore far more than your skills and abilities. With flexible contracts that are renewable based on performance, we offer you the scope and opportunity to discover every aspect of Chinese culture, while assessing written and spoken English skills.

Your role

Based at one of our British Council offices in Beijing or Chongqing, you’ll travel to a variety of locations across China to assess candidates in their use of English. This can involve long-distance journeys and extended stays away from your base, so we’ll give you plenty of help with travel arrangements, hotel bookings and support if you get delayed. You’ll also be able to plan your own downtime, so you can explore China around each assignment.

What we offer

We aim to be a supportive employer, which is why we are offering a unique contract that involves working at least six days a month, with extensive opportunities to boost your income by working additional days each month. This flexible approach puts you in control, enabling you to decide when to add to your earnings and when to feed your sense of adventure - to this end, we also offer learning support so that you can learn Chinese. We also provide opportunities for career progression.

What to expect

Examiners are entitled with flexibility to provide availability based on their own capacity. The more availability you provided, the more you can earn. Beijing is the largest centre in China and during peak time such as August and December, the income can be expected much higher than that when you work as a teacher in China.

What you will need

- A Bachelor's or higher degree (MA in TESOL or Applied Linguistic is preferrable);

- CELTA, Trinity Tesol certificate or other equivalent TESOL qualifications (DELTA or Trinity Tesol diploma is preferrable);

- At least three-year adult (over 16-year-old) English teaching experience with one year post CELTA or other equivalent TESOL certificates; (Only three-year experience is requested for those with a diploma in TESOL or DELTA)

For further detailed requirements and benefits, please check the 'Role Profile' on

If you are qualified, welcome to apply on the same page. Look forward to your application!
