We are seeking teachers to begin work in Hengshui University's fall 2018 semester and continue through next year. The 2018 fall term is from September through December, and the 2019 position would cover 10 months starting in late January, with time off for summer break.
We’re looking for new foreign teachers who can make an impact at a growing university near Beijing. Whether you want to pursue a career in teaching or simply just try something different, this role will both progress your skills and give ample opportunity to explore the country. Although you will be working in an academic environment at a higher education institution, we aim to be flexible and relaxed, and make sure our teachers are happy.
To apply, sent a cover letter and CV to Wendell, one of our current teachers, at [email protected].
After initial contact and an online interview, he will direct you to the English Department Administrators for further details as needed.
You’ll have a maximum of 14 hours teaching per week to deliver a comprehensive English curriculum for two semesters. Classes may include speaking practice, business English, public debate, or western culture. Over the course of the year you will:
• Plan and host interactive lessons
• Create and mark exam papers
• Maintain records of students’ progress
• Set homework assignments
• Assist with cultural events, such as the Christmas performance
We are looking for people who are keen to develop themselves and those around them. Candidates must be enthusiastic, resourceful and patent enough to deal with the challenges of living and working in a foreign country. You don't need to be a qualified teacher but you must have initiative, lots of enthusiasm and a hunger to learn.
• Have obtained a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent)
• Have a TEFL certification
• Be able to adapt to different working styles
• Be a native English speaker (British, American, Canadian or Australian preferred)
• Have excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Be a team player with great interpersonal skills
• Have an interest in Chinese culture
• Have 1 or 2 years of experience in a customer facing position
• Have previous teaching experience
Salary & Benefits:
• A salary of at least 6480 RMB per month; overtime work is 10,000 RMB
• Bonus per semester of 2050 RMB
• Mobile phone allowance
• En-suite accommodation on campus with all bills included
• Shared office and kitchen facilities
• Medical insurance
• Cost of both your flight into China and your flight out of China at the end of the contract period
• Paid national holidays (including 5 weeks for Chinese New Year)
• Free lessons in Mandarin if desired
• Occasional dinners out, day trips, or longer outings (funded by the University) with colleagues
Please apply quickly. Applications will be considered on an ongoing basis and we are keen to select the right candidates as soon as possible.
Hengshui University has a long history of successfully recruiting and accomodating English-speaking teachers. We posed some frequently asked questions to Nas, one of our past teachers, and below are his responses, to give you a better idea of what to expect from the experience.
- Have you enjoyed your time in Hengshui?
I’ve been here a few years now and it’s been a great experience. The guys here have treated me so well that I’m determined to find them some awesome new talent. I’ve seen a few different former teachers from several years ago come back to visit and I can see why. There is a lot of support to help newcomers feel accustomed to the role, which was much appreciated since I had never taught English or worked outside the UK before coming here.
- What is Hengshui like?
English Teachers are highly valued and respected in China in general, but even more so in smaller cities like this one. You’ll feel like a minor celebrity as there aren’t many foreigners around other than your colleagues, so you’re like a big fish in a small pond. Beijing is only 2 to 3 hours away for all the creature comforts that you can’t get here (such as breakfast cereal or cheese!). This city seems to be famous to people from all over the country for 3 things: the local high school being one of the nation’s best, its bottle painting art and its local liquor.
- What is the local area and campus like?
A brand new campus opened with modern facilities in September 2014 and the classrooms are only a 10 minute walk from your accommodation. The city has many amenities within walking distance from campus such as super markets, gyms, cinemas, restaurants, coffee shops, bars, karaoke venues, shopping malls, an arcade and 24 hour convenience stores. A weekend trip to nearby Beijing has all your nightclub needs!
- What is the accommodation like?
The accommodation is on campus and is very comfortable. Each teacher has their own furnished bedroom with private bathroom and shower. Each room is fitted with air purifying systems and a modern air conditioning unit that can range between 17 – 30ᵒC. There are 2 kitchens between 4 teachers, complete with cooker, microwave, washing machine and basic utensils. There is also a communal lounge with a small library of books in English and an old N64 console, as well as a ping pong table. Photographs are available on request.
- What are the students and lessons like?
The students are in their late teens to early twenties. They're very friendly and generally speak good conversational English as they study the language in school. You’ll have several different classes of about 20 students where you’ll usually facilitate games, debates and other activities. You will have creative freedom to form your own material, however there are books and set lesson plans available.
- What is the money like?
The money is easy to live on, and all past teachers have saved up their income nicely, since the day-to-day living costs here are very cheap. For example, you can buy dinner and a drink for less than 10 RMB, a bus ticket costs 1 RMB, a train ticket between Hengshui and Beijing costs about 40 RMB, and an annual gym membership is about 800 RMB. There is a high demand to for native English speakers and many opportunities to find private work which start from a minimum of 100 RMB per hour. The experience gained from a year here can lead to much better paying positions in larger cities.
- What are the holidays like?
Teachers are well known for having lots of holiday time and it’s no different here. As well as having all the usual national holidays off work (paid), the university makes an active effort to give its foreign teachers a 3 or 4 day weekend. At time of writing, I have about 12 hours of teaching time scheduled between Monday morning and Thursday morning, leaving me Thursday afternoon to Sunday evening free to my own devices, great for short travel excursions to other cities, rural towns or even the mountains.
- What are the next steps of the recruitment process?
Interviews will be conducted on Skype. Please note that the successful candidates will later need to provide two references (including a university tutor), one letter of recommendation and a doctor’s note indicating general good health. All teachers in China need to complete a TEFL qualification before arrival, however you can find ones which are fairly quick and cheap to do. Once the materials are sent via email you’ll receive an invitation letter to get your visa, then you can book a flight (reimbursed within a week or two upon arrival) where you’ll get picked up from the airport.
- What will you have achieved after a year here?
Aside from making new friends, having lots of new experiences and drastically improving your public speaking skills, teachers will receive a Foreign Expert Certificate which is recognised throughout the country and makes getting a new higher paid position much easier should you want to continue a career in China. Personal achievements of my own include getting fitter in my free time, learning some basic Mandarin language skills, actually begin to write a novel which I’ve had in my head for years, and exploring some potential business ideas.
One of our current teachers, Wendell, handles the applications. To apply, send your CV and a cover letter to [email protected]. He will get in touch with you about any further details.
