Tertiary Level TEFL Instructor | Peace Corps Response - China

Posted By: Peace Corps Response
Date: Wednesday, 27 September 2017, at 1:39 p.m.

Multiple Peace Corps Response Volunteers (PCRVs) are needed to serve as University TEFL Instructors for the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE). CEAIE focuses on facilitating international educational cooperation in China. The Government of China regards the education of its people as a fundamental component in the country’s development, and during this time of rapid change, the large-scale advancement of fluent English-speaking professionals is a key priority. Therefore, the Chinese Government has requested the collaboration of Peace Corps in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). Teacher colleges and universities in China currently are experiencing a shortage of qualified English teachers, and Peace Corps is seen as a strategic partner in addressing this shortfall. In addition, the current system of teaching English focuses on the grammar-translation method, which does not enhance students’ ability to speak and use the language; it is hoped that PCRVs will be able to enhance the variety of educational opportunities available to students.

Multiple University TEFL Instructors with TEFL experience are needed to conduct the equivalent of a full teaching load of TEFL instruction for an academic semester at various universities and colleges in the country. These teaching assignments could include oral English, writing, listening, speaking, reading comprehension, business English, and tourism English. The PCRVs will have opportunities to design and deliver sessions, and to develop their host country colleagues’ communicative capabilities and interest in incorporating new communicative teaching techniques into their classrooms. In addition, the Volunteers will work to educate students, faculty, and administrative staff on the mission and goals of Peace Corps in the hopes of creating a better understanding and support for future PCV placement. The Response Volunteers will also have the opportunity to participate in summer projects with currently serving Volunteers, conducting two weeks of teacher training for teachers from rural areas currently teaching in primary and middle school. Peace Corps TEFL Volunteers will help to meet the ever-growing demand for strengthening English language learning and teaching at all levels of institutions across the country by teaching TEFL at colleges and universities in China.
