Date: Tuesday, 11 July 2017, at 6:49 p.m.

The University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) is looking for teachers to instruct English-based courses to undergraduate or graduate students, depending on experience and qualifications. There are multiple positions available.

UESTC is a research-intensive institution and is ranked nationally #1 in Electronic Science and Technology and #2 in Information and Communication Engineering.

Location: Chengdu city, Sichuan provice, People's Republic of China

Chengdu is a large city known for its spicy food, laid-back atmosphere, and pandas. It is located in the middle of China, on the eastern side of the eastern edge of the Tibetan plateau. It is close to very large mountains, but maintains a temperate climate.

Official Work Status: Full time

As you will see in the compensation section, this position comes with a furnished apartment and a home office. The teaching hours will be between 12-16 hours per week (45 minute classes) but all office hours will be at home. Many teachers complete their classroom teaching responsibilities in 2 or 3 workdays, leaving the rest of the week to do as they see fit. There are plenty of other profitable things to do with so much free time.

Aside from the classroom, other minor responsibilities include occasionally hosting an English Corner with students or judging a speech contest or something similar.

For classroom teaching, a general expectation is for the successful candidate to teach students English reading, writing, speaking and listening. Some courses will be preparing students for TOEFL or IELTS tests.

In addition to basic undergraduate English classes, a few experimental classes will be taught in the areas of Academic Writing, Critical Thinking, and Intercultural Communication among others. Successful candidates will be offered to teach one of these courses depending on qualifications and experience. If you are interested in teaching one of these courses, please make note of it in your CV.

Length of Contract: 1 September 2017 – 30 June 2018

Technically 10 months, but if you choose to stay for a second year, you will be compensated your regular monthly salary for July and August.

Qualifications:

Native English speaker (due to China visa restrictions)
Bachelor’s degree or higher in English or related field;
Experience teaching English to foreign students;
Excellent class management skills and can communicate effectively with students
TESOL, TEFL, CELTA or related certification

Benefits Package:

Monthly salary between ¥6,000 – 7,000 (note the official work status above)
Free apartment (described below) or housing allowance ¥1800 per month
Electric, internet, gas and tap-water allowance
Insurance
Flight reimbursement

The apartment is located near second ring road on the north side. For those unfamiliar with Chengdu, search “UESTC Shahe campus” into any map service and you can view the area. UESTC owns a residential area directly north of the campus and most teachers are housed there. It is not available for public leasing, only UESTC staff.

The location is great. City central is an easy 15 minute bike ride and there is a fantastic public transportation system. Restaurants everywhere. There is also a strong network of expats in Chengdu.

The apartment itself comes completely furnished with wifi. It has 1 large bedroom and a second room (office), kitchen, bath (sit toilet, not squat), and living area.
