The Birmingham Institute of Fashion & Creative Art (BIFCA) is looking for an English Fellow to help lead its joint western/Chinese team from September 2017.

Overview:

The department is a collaborative venture - administered by both Birmingham City University (BCU) and Wuhan Textile University (WTU). However, you will be directly employed by BCU in the UK.

BIFCA is undergoing a large expansion, so is looking for a qualified English teacher, with managerial, teacher training and course creation experience to help lead our team into 2017 and beyond.

Your wider role will primarily be to support the students’ language learning prior to, and during, their university studies in Landscape Architecture, Digital Media Technology and Visual Communication.

* No prior knowledge in these specialist subject areas is required.

Required Qualifications - All candidates should have*:

- A university degree (preferably language or art based)
- A recognised English Language Teaching Qualification (CELTA / Trinity)
- At least two years’ relevant teaching experience.
- Experience of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses at tertiary level.
- Knowledge of art, design and media is preferred.
- Excellent communication (oral and written) as well as interpersonal skills; to establish relationships with staff and students.
- Flexibility, a can do attitude and the ability to adapt to other cultures and working styles in a multi-cultural environment.
- Be from a country with English as the native L1 language.

Duties include:

- Teaching university English language courses and support classes to BIFCA undergraduate students, across a number of awards / programmes.
- Designing appropriate course materials.
- Undertaking relevant administrative tasks (updating registers and records of work).
- Preparing, conducting and reporting the results of assessment.
- Assisting in curriculum development and project work.
- Internal Teacher training and support.

Salary & Benefits:

- A salary of £26,000 annually, plus a £1,000 relocation allowance.

- Assistance with securing a work visa for China
- One international round-trip flight
- Chinese National Holidays + 32 holiday days to be taken in Summer Holidays (around July-August) and Winter Holidays (around January-February).
- Regular weekly work hours. Weekends off.

Campus Life - Within a 300m radius of your apartment: Three university canteens (meals average 3-12RMB/$0.5-2), a gym (1,800RMB per year/$265), a small supermarket, the BIFCA offices and classrooms, a small mall, a Watsons, sports facilities and a street food market.

Nearby: Wall Mart/Carrefour (1km), Bars and Nightclubs (2km), Cinema (30RMB/$4.5), Western-style shopping area (2-3km).

Opportunities to Save & Cost of Living:

Despite Wuhan being a city of 10.6m people, the cost of living is still reasonably low. e.g. Taxi (10-50RMB/$1.5-7). Expect to save the majority of your wage packet after tax.
