Resident Assistant Position at an American boarding school in Kunming, China

AEUA International Academy Kunming is a boarding school whose mission is to prepare Chinese high school students to attend college in the United States or other English-speaking nations. The goal of the residence life program in the upcoming year is to implement a series of after school clubs, which will help the students discover their passions, give them opportunities for leadership, and allow them to practice their English in an informal setting.

Salary: 12,000 to 15,000 USD depending on experience, plus room and board

1-year contract from signing date

Start date: August 21st or as soon as visa application allows

Position description: The Resident Assistant will assist in the strengthening of the school community through the creation and implementation of intentional after school activities. They will help create an environment that facilitates English language acquisition, college readiness, and community engagement. The residence life staff will be collectively responsible for the safety and security of the student body. Additionally, each RA will be individually responsible for a small group of students. They will be in charge of creating a community, sense of identity, and home away from home for their small group. This is a live-in position.

Location: Kunming, Yunnan Province, China

Kunming is great place to escape the pollution and enjoy year-round Mediterranean climate. It is also a great base if you are interested in the outdoors or traveling (Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar are all a stone’s throw away). Although Kunming is a city of 6 million, many of the long-term expatriates describe it as having a small-town and “homey” feel.

Example Resident Assistant Duties and Responsibilities

• Lead nightly meetings with assigned small group
• Assist in the creation of after school clubs
• Lead after school club meetings
• Aid in the supervision of students during free time and study hours
• Confront inappropriate behavior consistently, objectively, and respectfully
• Report policy violations to appropriate staff members
• Monitor the residence halls during night duty on a rotating basis
• Plan and execute campus wide activities with the assistance of the other residence life staff
• Run a weekly small group activity
• Provide one on one English language speaking practice sessions
• Interact with and monitor students during evening meals
• Address resident concerns with the help of the Residence Hall Leader and General Manager
• Create a safe and welcoming living environment
• Serve as a positive role model to AIA students and staff alike

Approximate Working Hours:

4-day workweek
Weekday evenings 5pm – 11pm
Plus early afternoon tutoring sessions

What we are looking for:

• Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree
• Native English speaker
• Residence life experience, teaching experience, or similar work with high school aged students
• Leadership ability

• Effective cross-cultural communicators
• Experience working or studying abroad preferred
• Someone who loves to work as part of a team!
