SIMAD UNIVERSITY is currently seeking a qualified Deputy Director of Studies to help lead the Institute of Modern Languages (IML) starting in June 2019.
The Institute of Modern Languages houses its flagship English Skills Program that aims to raise the quality of education by strengthening English, the language of instruction in the university. Students learn a wide range of skills including critical thinking and study skills, which are all vital for students to perform well in any undergraduate program offered nationally or internationally. The program uses an integrated curriculum, which means students will learn all English skills together through relevant, exciting, and meaningful content.

Position Title: Deputy Director of Studies

• Managing human and educational resources;
• Preparing regular reports for the university senate and academic council;
• Supporting teachers through academic coaching, training and mentoring;
• Observation and evaluation of instructors;
• Scheduling classes, meetings and professional development sessions;
• Supporting and promoting the well-being of students;
• Overseeing assessment protocols;
• Liaising with senior management and academic deans/directors;
• Contributing to the long term growth and sustainability of the program;
• Partial teaching workload as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in TESL/TESOL, second language teaching/education or applied linguistics, or a closely related subject area OR Bachelor’s degree with Cambridge DELTA, CELTA, TESOL or equivalent;
• 2 years of leadership/mentoring experience in a school or college setting;
• 2 years of teaching experience in a post-secondary environment;
• High standard of professional integrity and commitment to academic excellence;
• Excellent problem-solving, communication and technology skills;

Preferred Qualifications:
• Doctorate in TESL/Applied Linguistics;
• Previous experience with educational leadership of English language programs (DoS, program director, supervisor, etc.);
• 5+ years of teaching and managerial experience in a post-secondary environment;
• Fluency in the Somali language.
