Wanted: Academic Manager/Administrator in South-Central Vietnam

Posted By: Global English Center <[email protected]>
Date: Sunday, 30 September 2018, at 6:15 a.m.

Immediate Opening for one combined position of Academic Manager/English Teacher (50/50%) in Central Vietnam (Quang Ngai City)

Start Date: Aug 15, 2018

We’re seeking an individual who has substantial teaching experience as well as administrative skills/experience. Since our current school is bursting at its seams, we are in the process of building a new school for the younger grades just around the corner. The administrator will work at both locations (which are only 200m apart).
The incumbent should be a native speaker of English and be able to assist the Director in various ways on our path to professionalize our English Language Center. Assistance is needed in the following areas:
- Supervising staff (teachers and assistants)
- Curriculum development
- Providing orientation to new teachers
- Teacher recruitment/interviewing candidates
- Establishing clear procedures for and supervising placement testing for incoming students
- Communicating with text book publishers.
Second, the candidate also needs to be committed to teaching in a student-centered, communicative language program (which comprises 15 of the employee’s weekly 40 hours).

Salary: negotiable, depending on qualifications and experience.
Direct Benefits: Proper contract, work visa and work permit; furnished housing (dorm room with communal kitchen and laundry facilities; shared bathrooms for 2 on each floor); national holidays off; a two-week break over Tet/the Vietnamese Lunar New Year (with partial pay).
Indirect Benefits: Quiet community, very low cost of living, off the beaten path, near to beaches and mountains. There is an extra week off, usually in June (unpaid).
Schedule: a) 20-25 hours of administrative work per week (flexible schedule)
b) Teaching 10 classes/15 contact hours a week. (Students are 7-16 years old, in classes around 10 to 15 students.) Teaching hours depend on the fluctuating depend for administrative work and may go down to 0 since we’re opening our new Center for primary school students later this year.

Native speaker with excellent command of the language.
Bachelor’s degree in the field but, ideally, a Master’s degree in the field of ESL-teaching, Ed Leadership, or similar areas.
At least 1 year of experience in administering a school comparable to ours.
TEFL/TESL Certificate.
Clean criminal background check.
Passport valid for at least 16 months.

1. Brief cover letter telling us why you wish to work at our school as an Academic Manager and why you want to teach/live in Vietnam.
2. Professional teaching CV/Resume.
3. Copies of diplomas, your passport, and relevant certificates.
4. One letter of professional reference; please include a separate list of two other referees who we may contact.

Emails with nothing but a CV attached will be ignored, as will be applications from clearly underqualified applicants.

Please send to:

Some additional information regarding the town and the area:
- Quang Ngai is not ‘hip’ or a place for people who are addicted to fun; you need to be able to amuse yourself. Your colleagues would be nice, fun-loving people, however. We party and go on trips together. If you like the idea of living in the ‘real Vietnam’ (and not in some big-city expats enclave), Quang Ngai is the place to be. We’re near the beach and traffic isn’t too heavy. The air quality is alright, and the cost of living is really low. There’s isn’t much Western food here (although we do have a Jollibee and a Lotteria now), but there are some bars and two night-clubs. Quang Ngai sports lots of cute, quaint, and quiet coffee shops. There are beaches 15km away, to which you could get by bicycle (which cost 50 to 100 bucks) or motorcycle (250 to 400 bucks, used).
The school is fairly new and well-equipped. We provide housing and a proper contract including a work permit (so no visa runs across the border and such nonsense), and you’ll make more money that you can possibly spend in Quang Ngai. The weather is hot during the summer but pretty pleasant between October and April. And during the rainy season (Oct 15 to Christmas), you’ll be very happy not to have to step out into the street to go to work.
