Qualified Youth Worker / Social Worker / Teacher Needed for Refugee Education - Chios Greece (Expenses covered)

Action for Education is an independent, grassroots organization founded in the UK and Greece in 2017. We develop and support projects that aim to remove the barriers to education for displaced communities. The education project Refugee Education Chios was launched as a reaction to the desperate condition of refugees on the island of Chios – a critical bottleneck on the road of flight to Europe.

The Youth Worker will work in our youth centre alongside the Youth Centre Coordinator. They will work with young people aged 14-22, encouraging them, providing them with support and building their resilience during this difficult period. The primary focus of youth work is on the personal, social, cultural and educational development of young people within the refugee community on Chios Island.

Roles and Responsibilities

Ability to work sensitively and professionally with young people, family/community or support networks.
To assist in the day to day running of the youth programme which has up to 100 young people and 10 volunteers.
To build a rapport with young people and listen to their concerns
To facilitate and participate in games, activities and discussions with young people
To work with three other coordinators to ensure the overall functioning of the whole project.
To assist with necessary programme set-up and clean-up
Support the youth centre coordinator in the development of relevant trainings for the volunteer team
Attend weekly coordination meetings and frequent team meetings

Experience

Qualification in youth work / Social Work / Teaching
Experience and an interest in working with young people  
Well-developed, flexible youth support skills  Understanding of community development principles  
Sensitivity and experience working with disadvantaged youth

The role includes a set monthly expenses budget (500 Euros), free shared accomodation and quarterly travel budget.
