Exciting teaching vacancies at Lone Buffalo English Development Centre, Laos – August 2018

Posted By: Lone Buffalo English Development Centre <[email protected]>
Date: Wednesday, 9 May 2018, at 2:00 p.m.

Lone Buffalo is a Western/Lao directed non-profit community project. We operate a free English Development centre in Phonsavan, North Eastern Laos.

We have vacancies for an experienced Lead Teacher and a Junior Teacher for the forthcoming term (September 18 – June 19).

These are not routine teaching posts – it’s an opportunity to join a small, focused organisation that really makes a difference to young peoples' lives in one of the worlds least developed countries. You will find the work challenging and, at times, frustrating - but ultimately fulfilling.

You need to be self-motivated and self-disciplined as you will be regularly working independently. You will be teaching Elementary to Intermediate level English using the Common European Framework and Global textbook series.

You will also teach English to adult staff of local businesses. Your primary objective is to oversee and develop the teaching side of Lone Buffalo; you will work with the local teaching team to further develop their skills and our curriculum. Supervisory experience is essential and curriculum development skills useful as you will be directly responsible for monitoring our committed team of six local teachers.

Classroom hours are between 18 and 22 per week. You will be required to use your own innovative and stimulating lesson ideas to augment the text book course. Some weekend work is necessary and you would also host regular Teacher Workshops and attend monthly meetings. You will report to the project COO for all teaching matters, and to the Centre’s local Directors for more general issues.

Lone Buffalo teach five levels of English to 10 classes in the afternoon/evenings after State school (max class size 25 students). Our students are both ethnic Lao and H’mong and their ages range from 12 to 25, although most are between 15 – 18 years old. We encourage creativity in the classroom and thinking outside the box through enhancement projects.

We are much more than an English Development Centre. Central to our ethos is linking English study with sport and creative skills – and developing leadership skills among our students. We have structured weekend football-coaching sessions for both male and females, using qualified student coaches. We have developed a culture of film making among our young people through professionally taught workshops. Students now direct their own short films which regularly feature at the Vientiane Film Festival.

A further programme is student monitoring. As students move away to study at University, we provide support and help them to find part time employment and pass on scholarship information. As they graduate we introduce them to prospective employers.

An allowance (up to $600 pcm) will be available for the Lead Teacher role. However, it’s more of a vocational position, a paid volunteer job, working for a respected organisation that is making a real difference in the community.

We also have a vacancy for a Junior Volunteer Teacher. This role would suit someone fairly new to teaching, although reasonable amount of classroom experience is necessary. This is a great opportunity for someone starting their career in teaching; you will have a reasonable amount of independence and the opportunity to bring your own creative ideas to the classroom. A small allowance (up to $300 pcm) is available, depending on circumstances.

Accommodation is provided for both positions in a pleasant rented house in a quiet community equidistant from our centre and the town, a 15-minute bicycle ride away.
