Opportunity for an International Volunteer Coordinator with TEFL/primary school teaching experience in rural Malawi

H.E.L.P. Malawi is seeking a passionate, energetic, creative, experienced individual to join our team. The International Volunteer Coordinator (IVC) is a management position within H.E.L.P. Malawi, based at Nanthomba Full Primary School near the Liwonde National Park, Malawi. Please find out more about us at http://helpchildren.org

The IVC is responsible for all aspects of H.E.L.P. Malawi’s volunteer program (advertising the program, volunteer recruitment, program placements, training, supervision, budget, & records) and also runs and teaches the afterschool English Activity Class at Nanthomba Primary School, Balaka district.

The position will start at the end of June 2018 on a one or (preferably) two-year contract. You must be available to come to Malawi and start the last week of June.

Job Description for the International Volunteer Coordinator (IVC)
Volunteer coordinator role:

Advertise: find ways to increase the visibility of H.E.L.P. to potential volunteers. We want quality teaching staff at the school, qualified medical healthcare professionals at the health center, and other short-term volunteers bringing their individual skill sets to our programs
Recruit: encourage people to apply for the International Volunteer Program (IVP). To answer all inquiries in a timely manner and to interview potential candidates.

Support: provide pick up/drop off of the volunteers, using the H.E.L.P. vehicle. Be the first point of contact, to meet and greet new arrivals at the airport, and to support them in their introduction into Malawi. On the ground, provide the full orientation program for each volunteer
Administrative: keep up to date records on applicants.

Management of the volunteers, volunteer house, and bikes. Ensuring that these assets (properties of H.E.L.P. Malawi) are maintained and looked after

International Volunteer Programs role:

Volunteer Education program: Place and support teaching volunteers in a suitable standard to assist learners with lessons during the school day
After school English Activity Class: Plan lessons, coordinate, implement the English Activity Class alongside volunteers, using TEFL methods (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) by teaching 3 days a week

Deliver and assist with the IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) English program and provide professional feedback and curriculum reviews periodically

Coordinate and facilitate the after-school feeding program
Orientate and support health/medical volunteers at the Nandumbu health clinic in various departments (outpatient, maternity, HIV/AIDs, malaria prevention, outreach, wound clinic, etc.)
Collaborate with special interest, short-term or summer volunteers on customizing projects and programs that combine the needs of the community and individual skills sets of the volunteers to implement sustainable development within the community

Administrative duties:

Execute all duties in the most cost-effective way possible
Develop policies and procedures, update documents for the International Volunteer Program
Knowledge of budgets by managing the budget lines for the volunteer program, the after school and feeding program, etc – and providing information to prepare forward annual planning of those budgets
Prepare bi-weekly cash reports
Attend all H.E.L.P. Malawi staff meetings on a regular basis, support the team, represent the organization in a professional manner

Provide entertaining updates about school and community news and events on the H.E.L.P. facebook page

Supply fresh photos, films and stories for use by the Ohio head office (as required) for annual reports, the website, promotional materials, etc.

Upkeep of Dropbox records and regular communication with the Ohio head office.

Other:

Give tours to visitors at Nanthomba Primary School and Nandumbo Health Centre

You will need to develop a good working knowledge of H.E.L.P. Malawi’s history, mission statement, aims and objectives, partnerships (CAWS, IFAW, CITW, etc), Memorandum of Understandings with these partners (MoUs), and current and future projects.

Acquire knowledge about the Malawian teaching team and teaching methods, other school sites, the partnership with Machinga Teacher Training College, the other after-school activities, and how the Nanthomba School is organized (i.e. School Management Committee, local chiefs etc)

Develop a relationship with, and working knowledge of, the Nandumbo Health Centre in order to know their requirements and can respond to inquiries by medical/health volunteers.

Develop relationships with other organizations on the ground, such as Peace Corps, UNESCO, other volunteer organizations, and be a good representative of H.E.L.P. Malawi at all times.

Gain confidence in driving the H.E.L.P. Malawi vehicle in order to carry out various duties, as and when required.

Assist Country Director, Program Manager, and other staff members with other duties, as needed
Follow H.E.L.P. Malawi’s code of conduct and terms of conditions as an employee and representative of the organization

The ideal candidate wish list:

Bachelor degree educated (or equivalent)
TEFL qualified, previous primary/elementary teaching experience
A native English speaker
Experience in managing a team; leadership skills
Confident in a classroom setting and brilliant at lesson planning
Excellent organization skills, and skilled at computers to include Microsoft word, excel, Dropbox, using internet for research, & social media savvy
Happy to work in a multi-cultural team, alongside Malawian teachers and colleagues and an excellent communicator.
Previous experience working in developing countries, Africa preferred, Malawi a plus
Adaptable and flexible in living/working in diverse environments and rural areas
Trustworthy and able to work independently on specific projects
Personal attributes to include tolerant, intrinsically motivated, open-minded, patient, creative, solution-focused, AND a great sense of humor.
To act as a positive, culturally sensitive and responsible role model for the students
Current/valid driver’s license

Compensation/Benefits
A compensation/benefits package includes: a salary, travelers insurance with medical evacuation, one round trip to your home country per year, and transportation to/from Malawi, generous holiday allowance, housing at the Central Africa Wilderness Safaris’ Mvuu camp (inside a national park), a nominal meal allowance, use of a bike, plus visas/permits necessary to work in Malawi.

Final candidates will be required to possess a police check and medical verification. Finalist will also be required to submit proper documentation for Temporary Employment Permit (TEP) prior to arriving in Malawi. You will have to have the necessary immunizations to work in rural Africa.
