Vacancy Announcement

Education Development Intern – Zambia-based

Impact Network is a New York-based NGO that delivers innovative e-learning programs in rural Africa. We introduce technology into remote, “off the grid” communities that lack trained teachers, enabling thousands of students to benefit from a high-quality education every year. Our eSchool 360 model combines tablet technology with an interactive curriculum, intensive teacher training, weekly management, and solar power. We provide primary school students with a quality education for just $3 a month and empower teachers and students with technology tools to create a “learning by doing” approach to education.

The opportunity:
Impact Network has an opening for a solutions-oriented, driven, and adventurous individual with a background in education to spend 3 months as a volunteer in Zambia. This is an excellent opportunity for a professional and committed individual to share their skills and experience in education to help improve the quality of teaching and learning in our schools. It is a challenging role based in a rural area of Zambia without consistent electricity, internet, or running water, and will provide a highly rewarding experience for the right candidate.

We are in an exciting phase of our work, having completed our 9-school pilot in a rural area of Zambia's Eastern Province, we are expanding to 35 additional schools this year. In an independent study, our schools were shown to cost 70% less than government schools while significantly improving the math and reading scores. Now, we have the opportunity to explore and implement different interventions in the schools and work on the expansion.

Volunteer objectives:
Assist in monitoring Impact Network’s primary education programs through close engagement with local management staff and teachers
Observe and provide feedback to teachers on a daily basis; interact with school heads and support teacher supervisors to improve learning quality
Draw on your education background to troubleshoot areas to improve the functioning of the schools with Zambian staff and executive team in New York and ensure solutions are implemented successfully
Work with Zambian teacher supervisors and executive team to implement teacher training sessions on e-learning and education pedagogy
Develop and pilot new programs in collaboration with Zambian team
Act as a communications bridge between our team in New York and operations in Zambia through weekly calls, observation reports, and regular blog posts
Support meetings and communications with our Zambian partners and vendors

Core values & qualifications:
A background in the education sector and/or teaching, and interest in sharing your skills and knowledge with educators in rural Zambia, are required
Interest in international development and/or technology as they relate to education
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
A strong sense of adventure, open mind, respect for new cultures, and track record of persevering through challenging personal circumstances
Experience living or traveling in Africa or other developing parts of the world
Relevant academic qualifications to university level
Alignment to Impact Network's mission and values
Commitment of 3 months full time beginning the middle/end of May 2018.
Please note: this is an unpaid volunteer position. It is not a teaching position. Impact Network will cover the costs of accommodation, food, and laundry during the volunteer period, but other costs (such as flights, insurance, and travel medicine) are the responsibility of the volunteer.

How to apply:
Send a resume and cover letter detailing your relevant experiences and motivation to [email protected]. Please highlight how your background in education will enable you to be an asset to the Impact Network team.
These documents should be submitted as a single .doc or .pdf file with the subject “Zambia Education Intern.”
Deadline: April 15, 2018. We will review applications on a rolling basis starting early December; early submissions are encouraged.
Start date: mid-late May 2018.
