Director of Studies (English), UTS Insearch, Sydney, Australia

UTS Insearch provides a pathway for students into the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), one of Australia's leading universities. It is our purpose to prepare both international and local students to succeed at UTS by providing leading higher education diplomas, Foundation Studies and academic English courses.

We are currently seeking applications for The Director of Studies (English Language Department).

The Director of Studies is responsible for the quality delivery of English language programs at Insearch Sydney and, on advice from the Dean and Associate Dean, the implementation and development of key strategic initiatives and projects designed to ensure the continued quality of our students' experiences and achievement of learning objectives.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Teaching and Learning excellence

•Develop and implement initiatives to enhance student language acquisition and increase student engagement in class

•Lead the development of innovative learning support programs

•Serve as point of contact for collaboration and communication of information from the curriculum and assessment team

•Integrate appropriate educational technology into classroom learning and in learning support

•Provide leadership of ESP and CELTA programs

•Monitor and assess and respond to student feedback

•Chair meetings with English Student Advisory group, communicating via multiple feedback loops to all stakeholders

Policy, procedures and reporting

•Advise on and develop policies, procedures and guidelines for the consistent delivery of quality education programs and systems.

•Ensure the functionality of systems for managing and reporting enrolments and results

•Review, resolve and report on all issues of student or staff misconduct

•Moderate and ratify all student final results

•Participate with auditing of classes as and when required

•Participate in the academic governance of Insearch through membership of the Insearch Academic Board and its committees.

People management

• Recruit, lead and manage English teaching staff

•Develop a culture of teaching where the student learning experience is prioritized

•Lead and manage the development of teachers scholarly and professional development

•Oversee the management of staff relief rosters

•Lead teacher observation programs through demonstration of exemplary pedagogical knowledge and delivery and provision of mentoring as required Management of Teaching and Learning

•Development and maintenance of a positive student-centred workplace culture

Other Initiatives & Responsibilities

•Contribute to the culture of continuous professional development

•Lead and contribute to educational projects or committees as required by the Dean of Studies or Associate Dean of English

•Support agreed student recruitment initiatives

•Participate in the Joint Consultative Committee (Insearch's Teachers and Management representative committee).

•Fairly and consistently apply the terms and conditions of Insearch's Enterprise Agreement

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

Minimum Qualifications:

•Bachelor degree

•Master's degree in Applied Linguistics/TESOL or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications

• Teacher training qualification (CELTA preferred)

•Postgraduate management qualification

•Research degree or Masters degree with observed teaching practicum

Skills and Experience

•Substantial language teaching experience with evidence of successful student outcomes

•Quality management experience

•A track record of successfully leading large teams and effectively managing teaching staff

•Syllabus design experience

•Educational quality auditing and reporting experience

•Demonstrable knowledge of best practice in approaches to student learning including academic intervention and extension

•Teacher training experience

•Experience developing and implementing education policy and procedures including compliance management procedures

•Demonstrable cross-cultural competency

•Experience working with multiple stakeholders on a consultative and constantly iterative project

•Demonstrable depth and breadth of knowledge of contemporary best practice in EAP

Capabilities and Personal Attributes

•Excellent verbal and written communication skills

•Advanced negotiation and influencing skills

•Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, effectively manage fluctuating student numbers and respond to changing priorities as required

•Ability to achieve objectives independently

•Is adaptable, resilient and remains optimistic in the face of change. Promotes and supports organisational change and helps others to stay focused and positive

•Continues their own professional development, including keeping updated on current trends and activities

•Actively builds collaborative relationships and networks across boundaries
