The position involves teaching English to highly motivated and disciplined Buddhist monks of various ages, starting at 18 years old, who come from all parts of the Himalayan region (Tibet, north and north-east India, Nepal, Bhutan and Sikkim). At the Dzongsar Khyentse Chokyi Lodro College of Dialectics, or DKCLI—a monastic college, or ‘shedra’ in the Tibetan language—they pursue a philosophy degree that requires 11 years of study. There are currently around 500 monks living and studying at DKCLI.
The shedra is located in a quiet, pristine and beautiful valley in the foothills of the Himalayas, surrounded by tea plantations. Its peace can sometimes be disturbed by herds of sheep during daytime or by the students’ enthusiastic dialectics debates at dusk.
Although there are opportunities to socialize with other foreigners and savor western style meals nearby, the ideal candidate should be able to enjoy a quiet life and interaction with monks and other staff as his/her main social activity. Interest in Buddhism and Himalayan culture is a plus, as there will be plenty of opportunities to learn from our qualified philosophy professors, our students or a vast library of English books just 15 minutes away.

Candidate’s requirements:
- Native English speakers are given preference
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- Minimum of CELTA / Trinity TESOL, plus experience in an ESL setting.
- Ability to plan enjoyable, high quality classes while following our structured work plan, scheduled tests and deadlines.
- Ability to interact constructively with the rest of the staff in our weekly evaluation meetings.
- A somewhat professional and modest dress code is recommended (jackets are not required).
