Fall 2014 Volunteer Teacher in Nablus, Palestine
Teach for Palestine is looking for five new recruits! We are searching for enthusiastic English teaching volunteers to join us for our Fall 2014 term beginning in late August.
About the organization:
We work with some of the most at-risk youth in the West Bank, offering them an opportunity to improve their life chances through education. As well as teaching English, we instruct our students in critical thinking, physical education, and art.
We work in numerous community centers in the refugee camps and villages in and around the city of Nablus. We have recently, and successfully, transitioned to an all-girls after-school program that loosely follows the Palestinian state school curriculum. We believe this transition will improve our girls’ opportunities in higher education; this will also allow the girls the same chance to experience extra-curricular activities in the same way their male-counterparts do.
Volunteer Development Program:
We are a small non-profit organization, but we strive to offer our volunteers comprehensive training.
We offer a week-long, intensive teacher training before each semester begins. In this training, we walk our teachers through our curriculum, lesson planning, materials creation, classroom management, and classroom presentation. While the curriculum is a large part of our classes, we also encourage teacher creativity in creating supplementary activities. We will have regular teacher workshops throughout the rest of the semester to continue teacher development.
We encourage our volunteers to experience all dimensions of Palestinian and Nabulsi culture during their time with the organization. We offer a private Arabic language course to all volunteers, taught by a qualified, native speaker. We also arrange cultural activities for our volunteers throughout the semester. Activities can include a tour of the old city and other historical sites around the city.
Teaching experience is preferable but not necessary. Instead, we look for university graduates who are adept at living in a conservative and unpredictable city, who can demonstrate creativity and dynamism both inside and outside the classroom, and who are willing to go the extra mile to make their teaching site unique and successful.
- Experience working with children ages 5 - 13
- Experience travelling or living in the Middle East
- Prior Arabic language skills
Each volunteer teacher is provided with a small monthly stipend of 100 USD to cover transportation costs to and from their site each day. We also provide shared accommodation with electricity, water, and internet.
To Apply:
Please submit a cover letter, resume, and recent photograph to by 2 June 2014. For more information about our organization, check out our website at
