Vacancies for Both an Experienced Senior and a Junior Volunteer Teacher in Phonsavan, Xieng Khouang, Laos

Posted By: Lone Buffalo Foundation <bree@lonebuffalo.org>
Date: Wednesday, 9 April 2014, at 10:24 a.m.

Lone Buffalo Foundation (LBF) is an English run, non-profit organisation, operating a free English development centre and football coaching programs in Phonsavan, Northern Laos.

We currently have vacancies for both an experienced senior and a junior volunteer teacher. Ideally applicants should be available to start late August 2014 to ensure a timely transition of working practices and student education. You will need to be self-motivated and self-disciplined as you will be the face of LBF and responsible for school administration as well as being an important part of decision-making processes. You will also be responsible for training Lao teachers and teaching (daytime) business English in addition to our community classes. Classroom hours are around 20 per week.

Currently, LBF teaches four levels of English classes in the afternoon/evenings after State school finishes (max class size 25 students). We have elementary and pre-intermediate students and we use the New Cutting Edge and Solutions systems/textbooks. We also recently introduced beginner level classes (using local trainee teachers under the direction of the ESL teacher). Our students are mainly ethnic Hímong and their ages range from 12 to 30, most being around 15 Ė 18 years old.

We are much more than an English Development Centre however. Central to our ethos is linking English study with sport. We operate a small gym and have football coaching sessions for both male and female students on weekends. We encourage creativity and thinking outside of the box in the classroom. We have previously offered computer courses, are currently running a media workshop, and host regular movie nights. We arrange external visits to local places of interest and invite inspiring members of the community to talk to our students. We also work closely with local businesses to develop customer service and tour guiding skills for our classes. We try to manage our students post school needs and help find employment and provide support if they leave Phonsavan to study.

An allowance (up to $600 pcm) will be available for the experienced senior teacher and basic accommodation is available at the school. However itís more of a vocational position, look at it as a paid volunteer job, working for a respected organisation making a difference in the community and giving students better opportunities in life through English study and sport.

The junior volunteer teacher role would suit someone fairly new to teaching, although some classroom experience would be necessary. This is a great opportunity for someone starting their career in teaching; you will have a reasonable amount of independence and the opportunity to bring your own creative ideas to the classroom. This position will also become available in August, at the beginning of the new school year. Accommodation for this position may be provided, depending on circumstances.
