Princess Nora bint Abdulrahman University (PNU; Arabic: جامعة الأميرة نورة بنت عبد الرحمن‎) is a women's university in Saudi Arabia and largest women-only university in the world. It is composed of 32 campuses across the Riyadh region and a new library capable of holding 4.5 million volumes.] The university was founded as Riyadh University for Women in 1970. King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz launched the building of the world's largest and most modern women's institution of higher education in a self-contained higher education city. A new campus dedicated May 2011 can accommodate 40,000 students and 12,000 employees. It has a 700 bed teaching hospital and research centers for nanotechnology, information technology, and bioscience.
History
The university was founded in 1970 as the Riyadh University for Women. King Abdullah launched the building of the world's largest and most modern women's institution of higher education in a self-contained higher education city. This vision has become a reality with the opening of the University City for the Princess Noura Bint Abdulrahman University for Women. The University City is expected to be fully functional by 2012. King Abdullah says:
"Women carry a responsibility that is more than a duty, to maintain the stability of society and contribute to building the economy of the nation, and to represent the community and the nation to the highest standards, outside and inside the country. To be the caring mother, exemplary citizen and productive employee. Outside the nation, to be the ambassador of her country and community, and to represent well her religion, faith and our values."
The King named the university after Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman, the sister of King Abdulaziz.Nourah in Arabic means "light".
Women comprise 58% of Saudi Arabia's college students but only 14% of its labor force; much less than in neighboring Islamic countries. 85% of employed Saudi women work in education, 6% in public health, and 9% in the public sector.

Campus
The PNU campus spreads over 8 million square meters, including a new library which will hold 4.5 million books. There are 800 buildings and ten gates between Riyadh and the university campus. In addition to housing for university staff and students, it features mosques, schools and kindergarten for children, and recreation facilities. It is one of the ten largest universities in the world and the largest university for women.
The campus also includes sport facilities that students can use. However, they have not been opened to serve the students.
Transportation
The campus and community has an 11.5 km automated metro for students, which uses the same AnsaldoBreda Driverless Metro technology as the Copenhagen metro. It has 22 two car AnsaldoBreda trains each having maximum capacity up to 110 passengers and maximum speed of 60 km/h. On 4 September 2012, the Saudi Railway Authority made the announcement that it would grant the University a license to operate automated trains on campus.
The expansion of the campus was done in a record time of two years supported by 75,000 construction workers and latest building machinery and methodologies. University City is expected to be fully functional by 2012.
Thirty-eight of its buildings, totaling a million square meters, have applied for a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating. The campus operates a metro shuttle and electric vehicles, and solar panels power 18% of its air conditioning.[15] The new PNU library has applied for the second highest LEED "Gold" rating.

Despite aspiring to be a modern country in many respects, Saudi Arabia still has one of the most traditional societies in the world. Life in Saudi Arabia is governed by firm religious beliefs, rules and traditions, and expats living in Saudi Arabia have to get used to that as there is no way around it.

The traditions and attitudes of Saudi Arabia have been shaped by Islam as well as Bedouin culture. Thus, expats living in Saudi Arabia will discover that family bonds are still much stronger than in many other cultures, to an extent that they permeate all aspects of life in Saudi Arabia, even in the business world.

Although there are some cinemas in larger cities, relinquishing the joys of theater comes with the territory of life in Saudi Arabia for expats.

Music and dance form an important part of cultural life in Saudi Arabia, as does Bedouin poetry. Literature in Saudi Arabia in general is, however, kept in check by strict censorship rules. If a life in Saudi Arabia is planned for expats, they should be aware that, just as there is no freedom of religion, there is no real freedom of expression, either.

Open City Contract
Occasionally a teacher wants to come during a certain term but all of the positions are filled. In these cases we can sometimes offer “open city” contracts. With these contracts we don't assign you a city until most likely after you arrive in China. Most teachers under this contract will arrive in one of our larger cities for training, and will
then be placed after that point in an Aston school that needs a teacher. The contract is exactly the same as a normal contract except no city is indicated initially.

Personal Leave

For a one year, 28 hour per week contract you will have 14 days of personal leave. This leave covers both
vacation time and sick leave. Vacation time must be taken in full

One year, 28 hour Contract it would be taken in two blocks of 7 days (separate or together). The school manager will have to approve any vacation time dates in advance as well.
Sick leave can count towards vacation time or be taken at an hourly rate from the salary instead.
In addition, there are three major holiday periods in China: Labor Day (May 1), National Day (October 1), and

Spring Festival (Chinese New Year; which takes place in late January and/or early February). During these
three periods you will have paid holidays depending on the scheduling of the school you are assigned to.
There are a few other minor Chinese holidays and festivals throughout the year which may also result in some
time off. Initial TrainingAston believes in the ongoing professional development of its team and teachers are a core component of that team. Teachers are given, and required to complete, two days of initial

Teacher Certification (TCERT) training designed to equip teachers to use the Company interactive teaching
approach. For teachers with less experience, or teachers aiming to build on previous skills, we also offer an intensive “Introduction to Teaching English as a Foreign Language” course. This TEFL course blends theory with practical components and covers many aspects of teaching, including teaching English
to children, classroom management techniques, grammar, pronunciation, listening, speaking, reading, preparing lessons, teaching English to adults, and more. It also includes real teaching
practice with feedback from experienced Aston Teacher Trainers.

Do most days off fall on weekdays? Are split days off the norm?
The number of days off you'll have depends heavily on the contract you sign. A 19 hour teacher will only work 2-3 days a week. A 23 hour teacher will only work 3-4 days a week. A 28-hour teacher will have 2, non-consecutive days off a week. For more info on the different contract packages we offer, please click here.
In general, are overtime and tutoring available?
Technically we are supposed to discourage private tutoring but as long as it doesn't interfere with your schedule most of the schools don't mind this. Any other teaching for other schools or companies would need the express written consent of your manager. The amount of overtime avaliable within your school will vary according to school and season.
What do my work hours consist of, are the hours divided into teaching and office hours?
Your hours have both teaching and office hours. All contracted teachers will have 3 office hours combined with their normal teaching hours.
• a 19 hour contract = 16 teaching hour & 3 office hours.
• a 23 hour contract = 20 teaching hour & 3 office hours.
• a 28 hour contract = 25 teaching hour & 3 office hours.
Given my background, what type of extra role might be considered?
We normally promote from in-house staff. Depending on your qualifications and ability to adjust to living and working in China this could happen within a few months. Some people love it here and get along very well, some find it hard to get used to the Chinese way of doing business.
Most new managers start out as General Assistants teaching a half schedule and helping out in the office and then move up to Assistant Location Manager, Location Manager, and then City Manager. There are also possibilities for positions as teacher trainer or in the head office if you have specific talents that Aston is looking fo

Money - What are RMB and Yuan? What is the exchange rate?
RMB stands for Ren Min Bi and it is the same thing as "Yuan". These are the Chinese names for the currency in use. At the time of writing 7 Chinese RMB (Yuan) is worth about 1 US dollar. The Yuan has actually increased in value about 18% over the last couple of years and this trend is expected to continue.
What is the apartment size?
They are all different depending on the city. They are typical Chinese apartments slightly above the norm. Some are more spacious than others and some are more modern. It all depends, so you would have to be talking to a specific City Manager to have answers to this.
Are the teacher apartments clustered? Are they within walking distance to the schools?
With few exceptions, apartments are located in residential neighbourhoods and very much integrated with the Chinese community. Specific circumstances of the city you will be in contribute to where the school is able to rent or buy apartments. The goal is to get them as close to the school as possible, and usually this means walking distance. There are plenty of commute options including bicycles, electric bikes, public busses and taxis, all of which are relatively cheap and convenient.
Are apartments individual or shared? If the latter, how are assignments made?
Generally apartments are shared with other Aston teachers. We ask applicants their preference (smoking/non; male/female; old/young) and assign from there unless you specifically request a person you know.
Do schools act as an intermediary in all matters with the apartment owner or building supervisor?
Yes, Aston completely handles the renting of the apartment, repairs, and all utility procedures. However, if you throw a late night party and make your downstairs neighbours angry, we'll have a hard time preventing them from yelling at you (or calling the police).Certain minor maintenance issues like cleaning out drains and changing light bulbs would be taken care of by yourself, as you would in your own home country. The school will obviously provide guidance as to where to buy what you need.
What is the average monthly cost for food?
You will likely eat out much more often while in China than you do in your home country. The food culture is one of the great things about living here. Even better, the costs of doing so are extremely low. Chinese food is extremely diverse, and eating out for lunch everyday, while enjoying banquet dinners with a group five nights a week can be done for less than 1500 RMB a month. Foreign foods (i.e. food stuffs from the west) are considered exotic and will naturally cost more than local cuisine. Cooking at home a few nights a week can reduce these costs by half in no time.
What is needed to open a local bank account? Is it easy to transfer money back home?
Opening a local bank account is simple, safe, and all you need is your passport. China’s major cities all have Western Union offices making money transfer simple. Citibank is making inroads in China as well, making a direct transfer into a Citibank account in your home country simple and cheap.
Is the instruction textbook based or are teachers expected to create their own lesson plans?
We have a curriculum and textbooks in place that we require teachers to follow at a set pace to ensure consistency and satisfy the demands of the parents. The style of presentation, however, is left up to the teacher.
Teachers write lesson plans adding their own activities or additional material as they see fit to complement the lesson. We encourage a personal approach to teaching rather than straight "textbook" study. Aston Schools provide help to teachers through initial orientation and on-going support. Orientation includes teacher training and information on living in China.
Managers and teacher trainers may schedule a time with you to sit in on your class to give you ideas on how you can make your job easier and help your students learn. Aston has teacher trainers experienced in the specific needs of Chinese students to help you throughout your time here.
Do the schools have a resource bank of lesson plans, books with teaching ideas, etc.?
Yes. At this time our Education Department, has collected sample plans for almost every lesson. There are also many teachers who have been here for a while and are familiar with most of the books to help newcomers with ideas. Schools have extra material in the form of idea books, activity resources and such but the amount depends on the size and age of the school. Aston Schools use a variety of textbooks, and classes are organized by English ability, not age. Please see our English Services page to learn more about the classes we offer.
Teachers are required to write out lesson plans to maintain quality, keep attendance records so that absent students are contacted, keep records of on-going assessment so parents can follow progress, and write a short class follow-up in the event a substitute teacher is required. While Aston schools do have strict curriculum and procedures you'll be expected to follow, we also encourage teachers to bring their own teaching style and ideas to every class.
How are the schools equipped (photocopiers, overhead projectors, computers, Internet, etc.) ?
China has not developed very far in this area. All of our schools have computers and Internet for the teachers. While all our schools also have additional teaching materials such as posters, activity/idea books, games, toys for young learners, balls, flash cards, and other odds and ends--the amount may vary according to the school. Visual aids are available to help with younger students and each school will have a limited selection of supplementary texts.
Technology is slowly making its way into the Chinese classroom but for now the expense to provide them to all teachers in China is prohibitive. TVs, DVD machines, and tape players may be available in your school and when used need to be integrated into clear lesson objectives.
All Aston schools try to have what our teachers need and are open to the suggestions from the staff on obtaining more items. If you know of something that would benefit the students then please ask the Location Manager.
Are teachers assigned a level (beginner, intermediate, advanced) or a mix of levels?
You'll be assigned a combination of different levels. Since Aston schools have 14 levels of instruction for children and 9 levels for adults, its safe to bet that you'll teach beginners, intermediate, and advanced students. You will not, however, have these various abilities in one class.
What will my teaching schedule look like?
The answer to this question depends heavily on the type of contract you decide to sign)
Essentially, a 25-hour teacher's schedule might look like this:
Saturday - Up to 8 hours of classroom time - anytime from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM teaching kids from 6 to 17 years old. Classes are two hours with a break in the middle and time for lunch. Lower levels are taught by a Western teacher and a Chinese Teacher. Sunday - Same as Saturday. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday OR Tuesday and Thursday - One class of adults in the morning. One or two classes in the late afternoon. MWF adult classes are usually 2 hours. The classes are usually 1.5 hours.
A 15 hour teacher might have a Saturday and Sunday schedule similar to that described above with an English Corner on one day during the week.
A 20 hour teacher would have a Saturday and Sunday similar to the schedule described above as well as one TTH adult class or a full afternoon of classes on Wednesday.
The above examples are not rigid rules; each school may vary schedules slightly depending on local market needs. Teaching schedules are set by the Location Manager so any scheduling requests such as certain days off or vacation time are made with the school. Teachers may be scheduled for a substitution class, an outside company class, or other events such as English Corners to fulfill contract hour requirements.
Is class enrollment strictly limited to 18 or less?
Classes are limited to 18 students for kids and 16 for adults. There are occasional emergency situations when you might have 19 kids but these are rare.
What is an interactive whiteboard
The easiest way to describe an IWB is to say that it is a large computer touch screen, a virtual filing cabinet of resources. The board can be used as a normal classroom board but can also be used to design classroom activities such as matching or gap fills.
Aston A+ has IWB activities available for the course and is constantly developing more. Basically, any activity you can do on a computer you can do on an IWB, the main restriction is your own imagination!
Can I contact my school administrator about what he/she expects before I arrive?
Yes. Once your application is successful we mutually agree on a city before you commit to teaching at Aston and sign a contract. You are then put in direct contact with the location manager who takes over answering your questions.

Teachers will be placed in 116 schools across China.
Teaching in China
China offers excellent opportunities for those interested in teaching English in China. The English language market is growing fast in China, and many new positions are becoming available. China is emerging as a global financial force, and with English firmly established as the global language of commerce, improving English competency amongst China’s citizens is a major focus for the Chinese government.

Typically teaching in China will take place at private language schools, public schools, International Baccalaureate schools, or private international schools. Teachers entering into these Chinese teaching jobs can expect a competitive salary, which includes a variety of benefits, depending on the type of school. It should be kept in mind that salaries in China are lower than in other parts of Asia, but the cost of living is much lower as well, so teachers should expect to save a significant portion of their salary.

Teachers should note that some ESL jobs in China have contracts that are known to change once the teacher arrives at their placement. For this reason, before sending anyone to teach English in China, we carefully screen its partner schools to ensure teachers will be entering into a safe, stable, and comfortable teaching environment, where all their professional and personal needs will be met.

Living in China
China’s history is vast, and encompasses many different historical elements united behind its walls. As an iconic world heritage site, no stay in China would be complete without a visit to the Great Wall of China, but other historical landmarks will be calling out to the tourist in any teacher living and teaching in China.
The Forbidden City is another well-known historical site, but most tourists only examine the main pavilions of this 980 building, 7,800,000 sq ft complex. There are many lesser-known and less-frequently explored mazes of courtyards, theatres, and gardens that are fascinating in their own right – perfect for those who like to take the time to sightsee.
For teachers who find themselves in Xian City, one of the easiest ways to take in the city is by riding around the still intact ancient city wall on a bike. After a day of classroom teaching in China, hop onto a bike with a friend and take in the sights and sounds of this 3000 year old city.
Things to Do in Beijing
With a population of 12 million people, Beijing is a city with no shortage of things to do, and people to do them with. Living in such a large urban area can be overwhelming at times, but this can be avoided with proper knowledge of what to expect. It is advantageous to make friends with other teachers and explore the many recreational options in and around the city. For instance, a teacher doesn’t need to be on summer vacation to enjoy a visit to the Summer Palace. Added to the world cultural heritage list in 1998, the Summer Palace consists of 290 park acres spread out over 2.9 square kilometers, three quarters of which is water. Declared by UNESCO as a “masterpiece of Chinese landscape and garden design,” there are a wide variety of palaces, gardens, and other classical-style structures that exemplify the Chinese architecture of the time.
In terms of recreation, one popular spot for a good mixture of socializing and sport competition is the Gongti 100 Bowling alley, which, as the name implies, features no less than 100 lanes. If interested teachers would rather be outside, one of the many (outdoor) golf courses will offer hours of entertainment. Golf is especially big in China, and is growing rapidly. Anyone who likes to hit the links should not struggle finding locals or fellow expatriates in Beijing to pair up with for quick nine or eighteen holes.

If a life in Saudi Arabia is planned for expats, they should be aware that, just as there is no freedom of religion, there is no real freedom of expression, either.

Life in Saudi Arabia: Society
Living in Saudi Arabia: Culture

Cultural life in Saudi Arabia has to be in agreement with strict interpretations of the Quran. In practice, this means that the visual arts, for example, are limited to geometric, floral or abstract designs, as representations of human beings are forbidden.
