Chicago Teaching Fellows. Train to Become a Great Bilingual Spanish Teacher in Chicago. Apply Now!

Posted By: TNTP
Date: Friday, 8 November 2013, at 11:04 a.m.

We don’t train teachers — we train great teachers. Visit http://tinyurl.com/pjbvnxb to learn how you can transform your academic background and professional experience into a high-impact career as a licensed teacher in Chicago.

Why Join?

We seek outstanding candidates who are fluent in Spanish and want to apply that talent by working with Spanish-speaking students in early childhood, elementary and middle school classrooms.

You might be a native Spanish speaker who now wishes to give back as a teacher. You could be an accomplished recent graduate who majored in Spanish or developed fluency while studying abroad who now wants to share your expertise with bilingual students. Whatever your background, you believe that every student can excel and will do whatever it takes to help them get there.

Program Overview

Chicago Teaching Fellows provides an accelerated pathway into teaching for accomplished professionals and recent college graduates who aren’t yet licensed as educators, but who possess the dedication and content knowledge to teach in some of Chicago’s highest-need schools. Our program is at the forefront of an ambitious effort to transform schools and meet the diverse needs of students in the nation's third-largest district.

Great teachers have a huge and lasting impact on students’ lives, and students grappling with the challenges of poverty need great teachers most. That’s why our program is so selective – in 2013, only 8% of all Teaching Fellows applicants successfully met our standards for admission, training and entry into the classroom.

In addition to bilingual Spanish teachers, we are also currently seeking outstanding candidates to teach other critical-need subjects, including science, math, elementary education and special education.

Successful Fellows:

• Take ownership. Fellows believe that every single student can excel academically, and they have the responsibility to get students there.

• Crave feedback. They seek out and welcome advice from instructors, coaches and peers.

• Commit to practice. They work deliberately to perfect new techniques that will improve their teaching.

• Embrace challenges. They meet the daily challenges of teaching in a high-need school with determination and optimism.

• Share their passions. They use their deep subject knowledge to ignite student interest, inspiring achievement and a real love of learning.

Benefits of Teaching in Chicago

“I chose Chicago because it was close to home, but I’ve stayed because my students need me. The people I work with also keep me here. I’ve had positive experiences with my administration and found an incredible network through the Teaching Fellows program.” – Alex Axell, 2008 Chicago Teaching Fellow

Diverse Population. Chicago Public Schools is the third-largest school district in the nation, with over 600 schools serving 400,000 students. Students come from a range of backgrounds – 42% are African-American and 44% are Hispanic – and have a range of needs, with tens of thousands learning English or receiving special education services.

Unparalleled Support. Chicago Teaching Fellows is pioneering new ways to support new teachers, with classroom visits, expert coaching and deeply relevant coursework that is continually customized to address Fellows’ individual development needs lasting through Fellows’ first two years in the classroom.

Classroom-Centered Training: Our training is radically simple: focused practice on key skills to get new teachers off to a strong start. With intensive summer training and ongoing coaching from experienced teachers that continues throughout the first year in the classroom, Teaching Fellows practice, reflect, and improve until they master the craft of great teaching.

Licensure that Counts: We hold the highest standards for licensure of any program in the country. Upon graduating our program, Chicago Teaching Fellows are recognized not simply as licensed teachers, but as having a proven track record of classroom success.

Full Salary and Benefits: While pursuing licensure, Teaching Fellows work full-time at school in the Chicago Public Schools district and earn a full teacher’s salary plus comprehensive benefits. In 2012-13, first year teachers earned approximately $47,250, ranking Chicago among the highest-paying districts in the country.
