ENTRY LEVEL North American Teachers

NEW & RECENT GRADS ENCOURAGED TO APPLY

North Americans working together with Ukrainian National educators has been an essential ingredient in the teaching philosophy that makes American English Center one of Ukraine’s leading English language schools. AEC is continuing to grow in 2009! In July AEC launched a highly successful school in Donetsk and in December opens a new school in Lugansk. Approximately 40 North Americans and 70 Ukrainians deliver English lessons to more than 3,000 young professionals at 10 locations in Ukraine's major cities (populations greater than 1,000,000) such as Kiev, Dnepropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhya, Odessa, Kharkov, Donetsk, and its newest school in Lugansk.

ARE YOU INTERESTED? READ ON:
American English Center is a respected name in Ukraine. It has built a solid reputation with teachers and students. More than 80% of the schools students join through referral. We are serious about our program and believe it provides results that speak for themselves. We are so confident that we offer our students a refund if they are not happy with their course or instructor.

WHAT WE OFFER STUDENTS
AEC provides results and value to its students. AEC's proprietary language program teaches English sentence structures similar to a program developed at the University of Michigan. Young adults in the range of 18-35 years receive 6 hours of direct instruction per week. The 6 hours is split between Ukrainian and North American teachers in class sizes of no more than 12 students. Ukrainian nationals teach grammar in Ukrainian and North Americans reinforce grammar through exercises teaching commonly used sentence structures. In addition, because the school believes the best way to learn a language is to use it, students practice their language skills in the more than 4 hours of daily conversation groups. To ensure student satisfaction English competency is tested of all students by a special placement manager and students are placed in appropriate levels. After each seven-week semester the students' level is tested before the student advances to the next level.

WHAT AEC IS LOOKING FOR
American English Center looks for teachers that go beyond the essentials of teaching conversational English, but also want to expose Ukrainians to and share their cultural perspectives with their students. AEC selects teachers based upon their potential to lead classes as well as their ability to fit into the community of teachers. American English Center trains its teachers with an 8 day intensive training program that includes classroom observation, mock teaching, and guest teaching. Teachers continue to improve their teaching schools through periodic seminars and classroom evaluation. Thus, there isn't a need for teachers to hold any type of teaching certificates.

REQUIREMENTS FOR TEACHERS INCLUDE:
> University degree is required --- new and recent grads encouraged to apply
> North American's whose first language is English (no heavy accents)
> Ability to illustrate the use of grammar in conversational English
> 12-month or 8-month commitment
** All new teachers must participate in AEC's training program. Therefore, ESL certificates are not required.

TEACHING AT AMERICAN ENGLISH CENTER

AEC works on a 7-week semester system. AEC schools are open Sunday - Thursday. Weekday hours range from 4pm - 10pm and Sunday hours vary by location. School locations are closed on Friday and Saturday. During the academic year teachers receive a minimum of 26 student contact hours per week in the form of lessons and conversation groups. Teachers receive placement at one school and this becomes their workplace. Hours are usually in blocks without split shifts, although at times teaching in the corporate program may be necessary. The use of a structured program removes the need for teachers to spend excessive amounts of out-of-classroom time creating syllabi and lesson plans. Teachers received lessons with exercises and a teacher’s guide. Teachers express their creativity within the framework of structured lessons. Teachers also do not check homework or grade exams; AEC has lab assistants do this. Thus, there is minimal prep time for classes and contact time closely replicates work hours. For their work teachers receive remuneration as follows:

~ GUARANTEED MINIMUM net of 14,010uah over a 7-week period paid every two weeks during the academic year.
~ Participation in 2 bonus systems
~ Opportunities for increased pay through additional hours and corporate work
~ Controlled rent including electricity, water, and central heating

AEC also offer a variety of benefits to its teachers including:
~ one week off after each semester. Two and three week summer and new year vacations
~ apartment finding and roommate matching
~ free introductory Russian lessons with learning materials provided (twice per week)
~ full-time teacher services manager to assist teachers with daily life (airport pickup)
~ On-call medical doctor for medical advice.
~ gsm mobile phone loan with sim card loan (free service within network)
~ Opportunity to transfer between cities to experience more of Ukraine.
~ Visa support letter provided to teachers
~ teacher get-togethers

AEC expects from its teachers the following:
~ to contribute ideas and feedback to develop the programs and school
~ to arrive early and be prepared to teach classes
~ to dress and act professionally
~ to participate in ongoing training
~ to attend monthly staff meetings
~ to prepare a mid-semester student evaluations.
