Teach in the foothills of the Himalayas, Pakistan (females only)

Posted By: The Kaghan Memorial Trust <khurram.khan@kmt.org.pk>
Date: Tuesday, 20 October 2009, at 8:32 a.m.

The Kaghan Memorial Trust (KMT) is a non-profit Charitable Trust registered in Islamabad in the aftermath of the earthquake that devastated Northern Pakistan in October 2005. The Kaghan Memorial School (KMS) offers free education of a high standard to destitute children in the Kaghan Valley, nestled in the Himalayas. This valley was one of the areas hit hardest by the earthquake, which dramatically exacerbated the prevailing extreme poverty in which its residents had been living for generations. The Kaghan Memorial Trust is dedicated to giving the children of the Kaghan Valley a meaningful education that will help them build better futures for themselves, their families, and their communities.

The Kaghan Memorial School (KMS) currently maintains places for 136 children, divided into four classes; two sections each of Kindergarten and Grade 1, with an approximately equal ratio of boys and girls in its classrooms. In March 2010, the school will expand by two Kindergarten classes (30 to 34 children per class) as the existing classes graduate to the next grade. This expansion will continue each year until the School reaches its capacity of over 900 students.

KMT currently has four international volunteer teachers working at KMS hailing from Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the US. We are now looking to recruit new teachers to join the teaching team in February 2010 with a commitment to work with us until February 2011. As a teacher, your responsibilities will include:

* Planning, preparing and delivering lessons;
* Assessing, recording and reporting on the development and progress of
the students;
* Maintaining records of class activities for the reference of future
teachers;
* Working in consultation with the rest of the teaching team and the KMT Managing Trustee to develop, update and improve the curriculum and teaching model for your School;
* Managing and maintaining supplies required for your classroom;
* Preparing articles and reports about the School/students to be sent to donors and child sponsors;
* Arranging extra-curricular events for the school and students;
* Any other Trust or School-related assignments that may be handed to you.

This position is open for female applicants only. Applicants will need to have a college degree and experience teaching children and/or teaching English as a second language. Urdu is not a necessity as teachers at the school work with a team of local teaching assistants. It is essential that the candidate has a strong sense of commitment to the Trustís objectives and is willing to volunteer to work for KMT for at least one full year.

This is an excellent opportunity for those wishing to bring a real and sustainable difference to a severely deprived community. It will also allow the volunteer to experience a rich and frequently misunderstood culture.

The Trust provides its volunteers with accommodation, meals, one return air ticket to their home country per year, visa expenses, local health cover, local transport facilities and a monthly stipend of Pak. Rs. 10,000 (approx US $120) to cover incidental expenses.

Interested candidates may apply by writing to Mr. Khurram Khan, KMT Managing Trustee at khurram.khan@kmt.org.pk All applications should be accompanied by a covering letter, a detailed resume, a photo and a copy of your passport. Short listed candidates will be contacted for further information including references. An interview may also be scheduled at a later stage.

Further details about the School and the Trust can be found at our website: www.kmt.org.pk
