Where did Sandy go?
When I was looking for a fun way to teach my students directions in English, my aide and I painted a walking map on a large painter's drop cloth. We used permanent markers to indicate a bird's eye view of a town with a park, beauty parlor, movie theater, grocery store, school, bank, church, and other shops. The streets were wide enough (about 12 in.)for students to walk on the cloth. North, South, East and West were also put on the map. I then printed directions on 3 x 5 cards. Students took turns walking to the directions as they were read. The difficulty in this project can be adjusted to the English learning skill. Students used this all year! Sometimes I changed the name of the buildings using a student's name. Such as: Jose's Medical Center or Pari's Beauty Shop. From Sandy Marttinen El Dorado Hill, CA
