Member of the Week
In this activity, each week a different student volunteers or is chosen to be the Member of the Week and share a story, experience or thought with the class for five minutes, without interruption. Then the class is free to ask the speaker questions or make comments about the talk. I have used this activity with college-age students and it has turned out to be one of the best speaking activities I've ever used. The students enjoy being allowed a glimpse into the personal life of their classmates and the variety of stories elicits so much new vocabulary and such a warm response from the audience that it's become a highlight of our class.
