Learn a Second Language
Here's an idea for ESL and EFL teachers: take some time to learn a foreign/second language yourself! You would be surprised how eye-opening this can be, and how much it can help you in your teaching. It makes you much more sympathetic to your students challenges and problems, it gets you more excited when they succeed because you've been there, it makes you aware of your need to stay fresh in your teaching methods, and it helps you remember what it's like to learn. Being on the other side of the fence is always good for a teacher anyways, and it can help us to run a student-centered class. Here in Egypt, I have spent the last 4 years working on my Arabic (both spoken and written) as I teach. My students love it! We have, every Thursday, lunch and discussion in McDonald's, and we alternate the language each week between English and Arabic.
