Choose an Issue
Many thanks to all the teachers who take the time to submit their ideas for others. Here's a simple idea to spark free conversation among adults reluctant to talk. Choose an issue for which there are two clear sides. An example from one of my classes: Nature versus Nurture. Then write a sentence on the board that represents each side of the issue. My sentences for nature versus nurture: Genes are more important than environment in determining a person's character. Environment is mor e important than genes in determining a person's character. The students then choose a statement to agree or disagree with, and give their reasons for why. When students disagree with each other, encourage them to talk to each other and not the teacher to discuss their differences. Hope it works!
