Divide an A4 sheet into twelve boxes. In each box, write a brief profile of a person- what they are (film star, murderer, shopkeeper etc.) and other details of their personality and life. For a class of fifty students, photocopy five sheets.
Cut the sheets up and give each student one card. They read it and have to find all the other people with their identity by speaking, in English, in role. First group to sit down together wins.
This worked with several classes of pre-intermediate, intermediate and advanced level Chinese students, who needed to 'loosen up' and speak more. A certain amount of cheating went on (ie showing each other their cards, and speaking in Mandarin), but a fair number stuck by the rules.
