The Human Compass
I've benefited so much from this idea cookbook that I felt I had to contribute something, so here is an idea for reading practice.
First, draw a line on the board going up and down and then a second line that intersects the first, going right to left. Make the end of each line an arrow, so it looks like a compass, with north, south, east, and west. Next, write a word or phrase that you want to practice next to each arrow.
Finally, have 2 students come forward and stand in front of the compass and words on the board. You can then call out one of the words or phrases and the first student to move their arm in the matching direction wins. For example, if 'computer' is at the north arrow and you call out "computer," the student who points up with their arm first gets a point. There are many other variations of this basic idea that you can use. Hope it works for you as well as it does for me.
