Where have all the doctors gone?
This works well with doctor/patient role plays, but could be adapted to any service role play. First, half the class are doctors and the other half are patients. The doctors sit down. The patients walk round, visit each doctor in turn, describe their symptoms, get some advice/a prescription then move on to another doctor. As the role play progresses, ask one doctor to become a patient. Now there are more patients than doctors (just like real life!) Encourage the students to perform the role-plays faster. Ask another doctor to become a patient. Queues start to form (just like real life!) putting pressure on doctors to speed up each appointment. Another doctor becomes a patient. Patients waiting in queues start to complain to each other (just like real life!) Stop the activity before the patients start losing their tempers!
