I had a group (in a company) that I could not get to stop speaking language 1...out of desperation, I introduced the idea of strip poker and applied it to the class: for every language 1 statement, 1 item of clothing came off. The first few items came off easily-- a watch, a jacket, even a shoe. But then they realized I -- and their classmates-- was serious and they took care to stick to English. It didn't solve the problem, but it definitely lessened it.
This works with a group you know reasonably well and when the group, your school, or the company is light-hearted and easy-going enough to appreciate it. If you think you'll have people in their underwear at the end of the lesson, it's not the plan for you!
