Questions, questions, questions.
I have found that when teaching children in Taiwan English they can resite anything put in front of them but getting them to form their own ideas and ask their own questions is like pulling teeth. One way I solved this problem is when we have reading class I have them read a passage from the story and then have them ask questions. Who went shopping? What did dad do? etc. I have found that it carries over into all aspects of their learning. They discover that they can indeed for their own thoughts and not rely on me to stimulate classtime.
