A favorite way of mine to divide students into groups is to use mini-puzzles. I have one puzzle per group, and one envelope per member of the group. Into each envelope I put a few pieces of the puzzle (don't mix puzzles now!). When the students come in to class I give them each an envelope with the puzzle pieces inside. Each student then needs to find the others in his or her group (I usually have a pictures of each puzzle placed where the groups should end up). An important rule is that no one may take another group members pieces. The first group to get together and assemble their puzzle gets a prize.
