Lowering the Pressure of Group Speaking

Obviously, itīs very uncomfortable for many lower lever learners to speak in front of a group.
One useful technique that I use is to always pair off students first, having them practice the
speech with their peers first. Then, after they have practiced, itīs time for whole-group feedback.
I have found that this is far more successful (and takes the pressure off) if students are asked to give feedback
on their partnersīresponses. That is, they are using reported speech (Maria thinks that...). By doing this, the
class is looking at Maria (whom the information refers to) and not all of the attention is focused on the speaker.
This helps relax the student and takes a bit of the pressure off.
