Did this with a class of upper intermediate,mixed nationality 12-13 year olds and it worked well.
Photocopied a chapter of Animal Farm (though any book would do. Maybe not Trainspotting.) Divided class into teams of 5 and gave each team a copy of the chapter. Told them they had 20 minutes to read before I asked questions. "Not enough time" they said. "I know" I said "So what do you do?" Teams realise they need to read 2 pages each, then talk to each other (in English, of necessity) about each other's bits to work out the answers to the questions. Not just reading skills, then, also speaking and oral skills.
