Famous and Inspirational Quotations
This activity is for imtermediate to advanced conversation classes. Place students into groups of three or four and ask them to interpret some famous quotations (perhaps 5 for a 60 minute class). If possible, you should list the name of the person who is attributed with the quote. For example, you might have the following inspirational quote by Martine Luther King - ¨The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands in time of challenge.¨
You can then give a brief history lesson of the roles these individuals played in society. The activity provides students with the opportunity to think beyond the transparent meaning of words.
