Did you know that for some
animals, there are special names
for the meat of the animal?
Here are some of the most
common examples:

There are also special words
for groups of animals which are used for food:
Poultry refers to domestic birds--chickens,
turkeys, ducks, geese. In supermarkets,
the poultry section contains the uncooked meat
of domestic birds used
for food. The cooked meat is called by the name of
the bird: chicken, turkey,
duck, goose,
etc.
Seafood
refers to anything
from the sea which is used for food. In supermarkets, the seafood section contains
fish, oysters,
shrimp, lobster, clams, scallops,
mussels,
squid, and other items from
the sea. The cooked meat is referred to by the name of the animal, but a "seafood
platter" or "seafood plate" is a combination of seafood
items.
Game refers to wild animals (both birds and mammals) which are used
for food. Most U.S. supermarkets don't have
game sections.
