Special Names for Parts
of
Some Animals

Did you know that there are special names for parts of
some animals?

Here are some common examples:

the horns of a deer, elk, moose, reindeer		antlers

the hard, pointed shell around the mouth of most birds		beak

the flat, rounded shell around the mouth of ducks, geese, swans, and similar birds		bill

the hard, sharp "nails" on the feet of many animals and birds		claws

the bright red flesh on the head of roosters and some other birds		comb

the thin, flat, webbed projections from the body of a fish that it uses for movement		fins

the "arms" or "legs" of animals that live in the sea (like seals, walruses, dolphins)		flippers

the thick hair which covers the skin of many animals		fur

the specialized "toe nails" that horses, deer, cows, and similar animals have		hooves (singular hoof)

the long hair which grows around the head and shoulders of a lion and along the neck of horses and similar animals		mane
