In Response To: Celta tutor bias toward experienced teachers (Nate)

As a CELTA tutor, I am disappointed at the thread here as there is no bias towards teachers with experience, MAs and other post graduate degrees. With respect, it is difficult for a trainee teacher to make a judgement on who is and who is not the better teacher. What I do find is that trainees who come onto the course with no experience are often at an advantage and are more receptive to trying out the new skills and techniques while experienced teachers, though skilled in their field, struggle to teach in a more student-centred manner and grade their language, and find the skills and techniques more difficult to adopt. Trainees with doctorates often struggle with grading their language to an appropriate level. They often find what they fare asked to do at odds with what they believe is the "correct" way to do things and suffer a crisis of confidence or even reject the methodology. It may be that trainers push some candidates harder if they feel they are ready to achieve more and are more lenient and encouraging with weaker candidates as they are at a different stage of their development. We are all different and respond in different ways.
