What you have heard about wages as a TEFL/TESL teacher in Canada is correct: minimum wage. Also if you do become employed the job most certainly will be part time hours hence not sufficient to maintain a modest living.

Obtaining a Masters degree in Linguistics is certainly a noble goal; however, with such a prestigious post graduate degree it will not necessarily secure full time teaching at a community college, certainly not in Ontario. Ontario colleges, run their academic operations more and more with casual, part time, and sessional teachers in all disciplines.

In large cities such as Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary whom all have an influx of many immigrants teaching English as second language is possible but extremely competitive because colleges and universities will give hiring priority to Canadian born residents, again, on a part time basis.
