In Response To: TEFL or TESOL? (J)

I'm just beginning my journey to get qualified to teach ESL.
I'm a native English speaker, and I want to begin teaching English here in the U.S., and eventually to teach abroad. Does anyone have experience with the TEFL vs. TESOL certificate, in terms of getting hired to teach both in the U.S. and abroad?

TEFL/TESOL/TESL... are essentially the same thing. The goal is to help non-English speakers acquire English language skills regardless if they're in the US or abroad.

The answer to your question, however, depends on who you want to teach: kids or adults as well as language schools vs academic settings. Before you jump into any training program, I suggest you head over to the Cafe's jobs discussion forum at the link below. You need to get a good sense of trends in the industry. For example, teaching adults in the US pretty much equates to part-time work, even at the university level. Teaching US children, however, offers better opportunities for full-time work but requires additional education.
