In Response To: Re: CELTA vs SIT in Thailand (Jeff Mohamed)

I realize this thread is nearly a decade old, and I also realize it went a little bit off the rails early on...BUT I thought I'd weigh in.

I did the CELTA in 2005. It was great.

I did the SIT TESOL in 2007. It was also great.

I did both courses in Thailand, as it happens.

I am presently a CELTA trainer in the USA.

The gist of what is mentioned on this thread about the differences is just about right. The SIT TESOL course tends to make more space for reflection and the materials reflect SIT's ver humanistic philosophy of education. It is, however, an intensive course.

The CELTA is less humanistic in it's roots, but it's certainly no dinosaur. And the intensity level is a bit higher, as it's the "industry standard".

One might argue the EFL/ESL field has enough humanism imbedded within it already; it's a good idea to take a more "serious" training course to really sharpen your skills and hone your professionalism.

Both courses, really, do that.

But again, it's really a matter of culture.

I'm a very "touchy-feely" type of trainer, and I fit in just fine as a CELTA tutor. It's a nice balance, I think - having me give you very human, personalized, and targeted feedback AND getting a criteria-normed "grade" as well.

Hopefully, the best of both worlds. Two sides of the same coin, really.

Come to think of it, I've posted about this here before..and that became something on my blog. If interested, check out the link...and make sure to read the comments, which might be more meaty than the post itself!

Cheers
