The previous respondent seems to be talking about university lecturer position, not just 'any old ESL teacher in a local language school' role. For that, you just need a degree in 'whatever', but the more relevant qualifications you hold then the better you can do any job. For any ESL, the core basic is the CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL.

But yes, many university roles will want an MA TESOL or AppLinguistics, or above.
