In Response To: Masters of English? (Linden)

I am looking to teach overseas in Europe or Asia in the next year. At this point, I have two Bachelors (Creative Writing and History) and a Masters from solid uni (English). This year, I am gaining teaching experience by working at a local university in the US. I aim to escape the uncertainty of the adjunct pool, however, and head across seas.

With my current certifications and experience, would I still need to take the TESOL/CETLA?

It depends on where in Europe or Asia you plan to head to. But if you expect to teach EFL long term and want to be competitive for the better positions, then yes, get a TEFL qualification (CELTA or equivalent) that includes supervised/assessed teaching practice.

For a serious career abroad, consider completing a US teaching license for English and gaining a couple of years of experience in the k-12 school system in your state before heading overseas. Teaching in private international schools is where the longevity and big money are.

BTW, you'd need to hold a passport from an EU member country to legally teach in much of Europe.

For more info about securing work in your target regions/countries, check out the Cafe's jobs discussion forum per the link below.
