In Response To: Lesson Plans for American Public School (David)

I will provide you with some help with your predicament. You stated your students can speak with some English fluency and you were wondering if grammar impedes or helps the learning process. Your goal is to teach your students to communicate in English. Most EFL professionals will agree that teaching grammar for grammar's sake and in isolation should not be the emphasis of an EFL class. You want to get your students to speak, read, write in English with confidence.

In my EFL teaching experience, I have found teaching intermediate and advanced students using newspapers/newscasts/videos chosen by the EFL students tends to motivate and encourage them to read, listen, speak, and even write compositions. Have the students pick an article from a newspaper, have them read, discuss and perhaps write about the article in class. Obviously mistakes will be made but this is where you as their teacher facilitates their learning.

Your objective is not to teach them grammar in isolation, but to teach them to communicate and if a grammar point arises, then you can conduct a lesson around that specific grammar point.

Pick up any grammar book at your local library/book store to use for your edification and this will suffice for your present EFL teaching project. I hope this gets you started.
